“I’ll have to spin your blood to see if you can give blood today. It looks like your iron is too low.” The Red Cross nurse spun the blood in a small container and said, “Sorry. Your hemoglobin is too low. But thanks for trying.”
I left the Bloodmobile that was parked on my college campus and didn’t give it much thought. I was eighteen and little did I realize, I had my first diagnosis of anemia. That was 1978.
Fast forward to 2002 when I was married, had four children and I started having chest pain just walking to my mailbox.
